Today, I celebrate and remember a man who shaped not only my life but also my hometown of Watertown, NY in countless ways—Tom (T. Urling) Walker.
Tom was more than a mentor to me; he was a role model, a leader, and a friend for over 40 years. From the time I met him as a young lifeguard at the YMCA, he took me under his wing, offering wisdom, encouragement, and opportunities that changed my life. He never gave handouts—he gave guidance, teaching me how to navigate challenges, stand firm in my values, and always strive for excellence.
Tom’s impact on Watertown was profound. As Mayor (1983-1991), he helped shape the city’s future, leading with vision and integrity. Beyond politics, his true legacy lies in his philanthropy and commitment to community service. He and his beloved wife, Mabel, were dedicated to improving education, healthcare, and the quality of life for all in the North Country. They championed scholarships for students, supported Samaritan Medical Center—including the Walker Center for Cancer Care—and played a pivotal role in establishing Hospice of Jefferson County. Tom’s leadership also extended to economic development, the arts, and ensuring Watertown remained a vibrant place to live and work.
But beyond the titles and accomplishments, Tom was simply one of the best people I’ve ever known. He believed in people, in their potential, and in making a difference. He certainly made one in my life.
Tom, you are deeply missed and every day remembered. Your impact lives on in all of us who had the privilege to know you. Happy 100th Birthday, my dear friend.
